This is one of my favourite films of 2019. I have been tracking it since I discovered the short film version a couple of years ago on Vimeo.
The short film was a distinctly weird and very different comedy; made with the style “of a series of vignettes” blended into one. When I realized the feature film version was being made I thought it was the best thing the filmmakers could have done.
Being a regular to London’s Raindance Film Festival, I was thrilled when I saw the film would be included in the festival’s line up. The feature is a grander version of the short, all of the same wit, amazing performances, colourful set pieces with art design that needs repeat viewings to catch the details; the feature is everything of the short and more. Thankfully it all worked because longer forms of original shorts doesn’t always, but not the case with Greener Grass, the feature was never boring.
I met the writer/director and stars of the film, Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe, at Raindance. I am follower and them and all their work at their production company Gulp Splash Productions. Can’t wait for their next project.
